On a lovely Sunday evening spent with my Dad, I noticed a lot of people wearing flip flops in Edinburgh city centre as I gazed from the bus.
I turned round to him and said,
“I just have this thing where I find it unacceptable to have your toes out in the middle of a city.”
To then look down and witness his toes staring at me from his Birkenstocks – we both laughed.
My time in New York pushed me down this thought process – witnessing in the height of summer rats, garbage and toes everywhere – my Havaianas did not step onto 42nd street.
In my mind, toes were reserved for the beach, pool or special-occasion-shoes (otherwise known as heels).
However, as I am always head down in culture for work, this morning I was faced with this article: ‘It’s a Great Time to be A Toe’
So, first of all I would like to apologise to my Dad and secondly, everyone who wears sandals in the city.
This was a good reminder that my opinion isn’t the be all and end all, especially working in strategy. It’s important to avoid tunnel vision and study other voices, as it can cause us to miss something valuable. Which in this case, appeared to be the rise of toes.
What now? I’m a sucker for a trend so I’m off to go book my pedicure and Google ‘platform Havaianas’ because I’m not sure I’m ready for my toes to be that close to the pavement – just yet.
