‘Have You Met…’ Is a series I started to originally interview restaurants, then I moved onto bloggers and now since moving to New York the series has turned to others who are new to the city and the USA trying to find out what they have learned and their favourite places to visit. To read my other interviews head here.
What is your name / age and where are you from?
Josh Lee – Leicester Mongolia
Why did you decide to come to New York to study and work?
The opportunity to come live and work in New York is brilliant, there wasn’t much to decide on.
Where do you work/what is your role?
I work at HSBC in Market Utilities mainly looking at KYC (Know your customer) which is great, its like playing guess who, but guessing who has drug and terrorist organization money rather than who has a moustache or a hat.
How are you finding having a roommate?
When I close my eyes, he’s there… when I shower, he’s there… when I’m playing the bongo drums, he’s there… I wish he wasn’t there.
Have you been to New York before? (If so, has your perspective changed? If not, is it what you imagined?)
My mum used to live here when she was part of the Russian Bratva movement of the 80’s. We came to see some of her old friends around 3 years ago and came back with a suitcase full of lovely money. I was only here for a few days so only really did the touristy stuff which now is of no interest whatsoever. I thought it was amazing the first time I visited and now getting to live here, has only increased how much I love the city.
What is your favourite area of New York and why?
Williamsburg in Brooklyn is pretty great, its got a really cool scene, vibe and atmosphere where people wouldn’t hit you for talking about things such as scene, vibe or atmosphere.
What is your favourite restaurant and why?
Nai Tapas Bar, hola chica guapa, Flamenco dancers and traditional live Spanish music and the best food I’ve had since being here.
What is your favourite bar and why?
The Garrett, a speak easy bar hidden above a five guys, the perfect setting to smooch Talors mum.
(Sorry Mum, he has this weird obsession with you)
What is your favourite happy hour and why?
Cubbyhole – The friendliest bar in all the land, $2 beers, free pizza, free shots and free back rubs.
If someone had one day to spend in New York what should they do?
Body shot off Stein
Have you traveled anywhere during your time here? Where and why?
I thought I’d make the most of being in the US for 1 year so have been to England twice, Portugal and France…
Most recently went to New Orleans with the lads and Neil to celebrate our footballing success of finishing 8th in the league (out of 10). Being joint top goal scorer with an outstanding 2 goals to my name, it was only natural to have been worshiped like a slightly less attractive Wayne Rooney by the locals, with many singing my name in the streets.
What is something you didn’t know about New York/USA until you got here?
It is illegal in New Jersey to slurp soup in a public place
What is one thing you miss from home?
After this year, if you could stay and live in New York, would you? Why?
That’s a tough one… I’m probably going to say no, I would love to come back some day but right now If I was fortunate to be able to choose, I’d like to live somewhere new for a year.
