‘Have You Met…’ Is a series I started to originally interview restaurants, then I moved onto bloggers and now since moving to New York the series has turned to others who are new to the city and the USA trying to find out what they have learned and their favourite places to visit. To read my other interviews head here.
What is your name / age and where are you from?
Catherine a.k.a Miss Leeds, 24, from the one and only… Leeds UK.
Why did you decide to come to New York to study and work?
I wanted to get out of the UK and experience a working culture in a different field of Events Management, meet new people and of course…. be in New York.
Where do you work/what is your role?
I work at IMN (Information Management Network) which is a global organizer of institutional finance & investment conferences. I work as a Conference and Sponsorship Coordinator under the Structured Finance division. Overall there’s about 8 Mountbatten’s who work under the Euromoney umbrella which keeps working life enjoyable!
How are you finding living in New Jersey?
At first I was a little skeptical, however after working in the City all week it’s actually a breath of fresh air (literally) to commute back to New Jersey. I much prefer being able to get out of the city when you need a little space, oh and looking back at the Manhattan skyline is an added bonus too!
How are you finding having a roommate?
I’ve never shared a room before so it’s been an eye-opener. I wouldn’t say that sharing a room has been a problem at all as I really get along with my roommate. Sometimes it’s nice to have a bit of company when you’re feeling far away from home!
Have you been to New York before? (If so, has your perspective changed? If not, is it what you imagined?)
I’ve been to New York once 3 years ago, as a ‘tourist’ (annoying people I know hate on my commute in and out of the city). New York is still as amazing as when I last visited, but yes living here gives you a whole new perspective on the city.
What has been your favourite memory of your year so far?
I find it hard to narrow down my favourite memory as there is so many… however I would have to pick it would be thanksgiving. A group of 9 of us hired cars and headed up to the Poconos for a couple of nights, we had the most amazing house with a fire… we pretty much just chilled, ate and drank with some amazing company.
What is your favourite area of New York and why?
Chelsea/Greenwich Village. I love walking around the streets and looking at all the amazing houses, there’s also so many nice restaurants and cafes for brunching.
What is your favourite restaurant and why?
Eataly. Because I love carbs.
What is your favourite bar and why?
Le Bain at The Standard Hotel. It has amazing views of the city (especially at sunset) and serves a very nice gin cocktail.
What is your favourite happy hour and why?
The Liberty.. $6 Pinot Grigio, a bar on the way back from work to the path station.
If someone had one day to spend in New York what should they do?
Explore Central Park, eat and drink your way through Greenwich Village, walk through Battery park along the waterfront to the Brooklyn Bridge, then of course find a nice rooftop bar in Brooklyn to watch the sunset with a very overpriced cocktail in hand.
Have you travelled anywhere during your time here? Where and why?
I get to travel quite a lot for my job which is amazing. So far (out of NY state) I’ve been to Atlantic City, Miami, Poconos and Pittsburgh! I have loads more trips lined up in the next couple of months: New Orleans, Washington, Athens and Vegas!
What is something you didn’t know about New York/USA until you got here?
How annoying it would be to live here without chip and pin. I’m still baffled at how they still operate a swipe system.. makes group meals with any more than 3 people all fun and games!
What is one thing you miss from home?
How cheap a food shop is in the UK..
After this year, if you could stay and live in New York, would you? Why?
I change my mind all the time as I can’t see myself living in NYC for the long term, however if I was given the opportunity to experience a couple more years here I would definitely consider it.
