‘Have You Met…’ Is a series I started to originally interview restaurants, then I moved onto bloggers and now since moving to New York the series has turned to others who are new to the city and the USA trying to find out what they have learned and their favourite places to visit. To read my other interviews head here.
What is your name / age and where are you from?
Emma, 23, Cambridge/Suffolk
Why did you decide to come to New York to study and work?
I came here for work – having graduated last year, I wanted to come & get a global company on my CV.
Where do you work/what is your role?
I’m a Content Analyst in the Finance & Risk division at Thomson Reuters. We do content analysis for News, Text & Video.
How are you finding living in New Jersey?
Amazing views but it’s not NY… we’re lucky though, it’s super clean and loads of convenience shops/Starbucks!
How are you finding having a roommate?
I live with my closest friend out here so I’m lucky, we both originally had a room to ourselves but it’s actually so much fun (apart from when she sleep talks, which is regularly).
Have you been to New York before? (If so, has your perspective changed? If not, is it what you imagined?)
Yeah I’ve been a few times, I love it but wish we were living in NY to get the real ‘NY’ experience.
What has been your favourite memory of your year so far?
Definitely the trips / meeting up with friends in different parts of the USA.
What is your favourite area of New York and why?
West Village/Meatpacking – West Village for the day/wandering round and finding brunch spots, Meatpacking for the eve – great bars in close proximity/loads of rooftops!
What is your favourite restaurant and why?
Cecconi’s in Dumbo! Italian restaurant with incredible views of NY skyline/Brooklyn Bridge
What is your favourite bar and why?
Catch! It’s a bar/restaurant/club & rooftop all in one, definitely our go-to in the first few months
What is your favourite happy hour and why?
It’s pretty hard to find a good happy hour here, but one time we found a small local Mexican restaurant/bar in West Village with amazing margarita’s – something like $5/6 & they kept happy hour on all eve.
Have you traveled anywhere during your time here? Where and why?
Texas (Austin & Dallas) – cool to experience this part of America! Just like you’d expect – live music and very cheap.
Yosemite, California – amazing national park, so nice to get out the city (bears inc).
San Francisco, California – new favourite area of California, v chilled and picturesque.
Las Vegas / Grand Canyon – must go!
Washington DC – so close to NY, feel like it’s a must.
Hampton’s – amazing in the summer & to go to a vineyard (Wolffer Estate).
Long Beach – only 45/1hr from Manhattan!
What is something you didn’t know about New York/USA until you got here?
Just how many bank holidays they seem to have.. which is great
What is one thing you miss from home?
My friends! Have been lucky how much they’ve come out but the time diff is surprisingly hard to talk.
After this year, if you could stay and live in New York, would you? Why?
I’d love to stay if the job’s salary was enough to live normally here/cross out the crazy prices of rent & living.
