It was a beautiful Saturday and my roomie – Flo – and I decided to treat ourselves to some brunch.
We were feeling ‘under the weather’ and we knew we needed to get out of the house, we didn’t want to travel to Manhattan because who wants to get on the subway when you aren’t feeling 100%? No one.
So, we sauntered along to Grove Street a lovely pedestrianized area of Jersey City, and upon inspecting every menu of every restaurant we settled on Porta.
Originally we went up to their rooftop as we wanted to sit outside but unfortunately they do not serve brunch on the roof – only pizza. We made our way back down to the front of the restaurant where there just so happened to be a table waiting for us.
I ordered a plain Jane coffee as they didn’t seem to know what a flat white was (still waiting to have a good coffee in NY – how is this possible?) and had a good study of the menu.
Flo went for the scrambled eggs with salmon which she loved and I went for the ‘eggs in purgatory’ which was eggs baked in a delicious tomato sauce with ricotta, oregano and chili.
We also thought it would be a fantastic idea to order a very large slab of mozzarella cheese, because – cheese.
The mozzarella was fresh and so delicious, we couldn’t stop gnawing away at it and my eggs were exactly what I needed at that moment in time. Deliciously savoury with a slight kick!
Our friends then came along to join us with one of them ordering a pizza – I have to tell you it looked so good I know I have to go back and try one myself.
Porta is great on a sunny day with a seat outside, it is the perfect place for people watching and looking at the world go by.
I could have sat there for hours.
The waiter was friendly and helpful, even if he wasn’t sure what a flat white was.
One downfall is that it is slightly dark inside as it is quite industrial looking so I would stick to the outside during the day.
Have you been here? What did you think?
Price: 4/5 (Mozzarella $10, eggs in purgatory $12)
Recommend: If you are ever in Grove Street and fancy a good bite to eat while watching the world go by.
