Have you met….Gavin Bell?

Ask just about anyone and they will let you know how obsessed I am with YouTube. So, after I had exhausted every Casey Neistat video possible I decided to research into who we had in Scotland.

It just so happens a sponsored Facebook video comes up of Gavin Bell, (which makes complete sense as he is a Facebook advertiser) which provided more content for myself to watch, just instead of Manhattan I was watching Shetland (and who doesn’t love a bit of Scotland).

Then out of the blue he dropped me a message saying he was filming a video about the best coffee in Edinburgh and he was told I would be a good person to take part. Since I essentially have coffee running through my veins, I said….uhhh YEAH.

If you enjoy a bit of Scotland mixed in with some entrepreneurial advice, public speaking and a dash of travel you know where to head.

So, without further ado….Have You Met…. Gavin Bell?

Describe your vlog in three words:

Ooh, let’s go…

Fun, adventurous, entrepreneurial

Where do you live and what are your three favourite things about that city?

I’m from the Shetland Islands originally but now live in Edinburgh. My favourite thing about Edinburgh is the fact it’s a good mix of city and country. One minute you can be in the city centre, the next you can be up an extinct volcano! The castle is also great. I’ll never get bored of seeing that on my way to the office every morning. Lastly, the people and entrepreneurial ecosystem here. There’s an amazing tech and entrepreneurial community in Edinburgh. Every day I get to hang around people who inspire me; people doing really cool things.

What is your favourite food to eat? Why?

This is a tough one for me as I tend to eat anything. I do enjoy a good quality burger though. I don’t think you can beat the combo of cheese, beef and brioche!

What is your least favourite food to eat? Why?

Brussel Sprouts. I do my best to get as much vegetables in my diet as possible but one I’ve never been able to like is brussel sprouts. They give me the boak. Every year at Christmas me and my brother will have a “brussel sprout challenge” where we try to eat as many as we can – not enjoyable.

What is your favourite restaurant to eat at, why and what do you order?

Perhaps a slightly different answer, but one of the best places I’ve ever eaten is on the Queen Mary 2 Cruise Ship. We were on the boat for 7 days and had a 5 course meal every night. It was delicious. They also had a buffet restaurant that was open 24/7. Dangerous but amazing.

What is your favourite bar to drink at, why and what do you order?

The Hanging Bat in Edinburgh. I’m a craft beer fan and they always have a great selection. Their beers change all the time so I don’t have a usual. But I enjoy a nice IPA.

Where is your favourite place to have a coffee, why and what do you order?

In a recent vlog, I did a tour of 7 different coffee shops in Edinburgh. It’s impossible to choose a favourite though as they were all great. Saying that, my normal go-to coffee/meeting place is The Huxley (not on the tour). It’s close to the office and I like their coffees. Filament have a pop up shop in the office so I probably drink their coffee the most. A wee fact for you though – I only started drinking coffee about 6 weeks ago. Before that, I really didn’t like it!

You can only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Ice cream or yoghurt. Or frozen yoghurt. Tough one! I’m a dairy fan.

What is your biggest food vice?

Interestingly, I think it’s becoming a good piece of dark chocolate. I didn’t eat chocolate for 7 years after a New Years Resolution/challenge with my brother went too far. I started eating it again this year and I’ve got to say, I do love it…

What is your favourite city for food? Any recommendations?

I think Edinburgh has everything you’d need? Or anywhere over in the states. I was in Austin a couple of months ago and their BBQ food is amazing.

Fill in the gaps : If I had to be food I would be…. Because….

If I had to be a food, I’d be a protein shake (my Mum told me to say this) as that’s what I have for breakfast every morning – and I do enjoy the gym!

What are your three favourite social media accounts to follow?

Good question! Maybe not food related, but…

I’m a big Casey Neistat fan. Also a big Gary Vaynerchuk fan. And just to throw in a foodie one, I heard Talor Gilchrist is a great person to follow 🙂
