Since meeting Hayley while munching froyo at a bloggers event I have been intrigued by her social media presence and writing. Not only is she funny, she is clearly a smart cookie as she is studying Chemistry – a subject I miserably failed in.
From finding the best desserts or cocktails in Edinburgh to travelling thoughts and social media advice, Hayley is the go-to girl when it comes to the adventures of a student.
Have you met…Hayley of Water Painted Dreams?
Why the name Water Painted Dreams?
Well actually… it’s kind of gibberish. I named my blog when I was 14 and it’s simply a phrase that I made up because I thought it sounded nice.
Describe your blog in three words:
Bright, varied and nerdy.
Where do you live and what are your three favourite things about that city?
I live in Edinburgh and I love it here because of the beautiful architecture, the student community and of course all the delicious restaurants.
What is your favourite food to eat? Why?
I love Eastern Asian food. There’s just something about all the flavours they use that I really love. Ideally I’d love to travel there one day so that I can try all the authentic food for myself.
What is your least favourite food to eat? Why?
I actually really don’t like eggs. I wish I did because it’s the go to item on most brunch menus but there’s just something about the texture that I really dislike.
What is your favourite restaurant to eat at, why and what do you order?
I had to really think about this because I’m not really the sort of person who goes back to places more than once – I’d rather try something new. That being said I absolutely love Bread Meats Bread. With such a wide menu it’s a great place to go with a group because there will be something for everyone. My ideal meal from there would be the Luther burger (ie a double bacon cheeseburger served in a donut) and a side of maple syrup sweet potato fries. Almost a heart attack waiting to happen but totally worth it!
What is your favourite bar to drink at, why and what do you order?
My favourite bar is The Dog House. It has a really great cocktail selection and they’re only £4 each which is very cheap by Edinburgh standards. And well, it’s a dog themed pub. The owner often brings his bulldog, Hero, along with him and customers are encouraged to bring their own dogs too.
Where is your favourite place to have a coffee, why and what do you order?
Is this a bad time to admit I don’t like coffee? I’d rather pop into Hula for a fresh smoothie or into Mary’s Milk Bar for a hot chocolate ice cream float if I’m feeling particularly self indulgent.
You can only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Probably some sort of stirfry? It would be a good way to fit in meats, carbs and fruit/veg and is quick and easy to cook. And you know, also fits my favourite food type!
What is your biggest food vice?
Duck – I can’t help but order it if I see it on a menu.
What is your favourite city for food? Any recommendations?
Boston! I spent 3 days there last summer and there was so much to eat! I’d recommend the Gourmet Dumpling House (between Harvard and MIT) for amazing Chinese food and be sure to grab a cannoli from the Modern Bakery.
Fill in the gaps: If I had to be food I would be a strawberry because I’m considerably better during the summer months 😛
What are your three favourite social media accounts to follow? (Can be any form of social media)
