Apparently being an adult means it is incredibly rare to get a day to yourself, so when it does happen I try to make the most of it. On this particular day I wandered around the National Museum of Scotland (blog post will follow this later) and then decided to treat myself to lunch, in walks Gannet and Guga, or should I say and in walks me. (That sentence made sense in my head).
I have only heard good things about Gannet and Guga, however the only opinion I actually trust is my own so off I went. It is located in one of the Arches on New Market Street which is slowly becoming my new favourite location in Edinburgh.
Gannet and Guga’s arch is decorated beautifully, including a roof of origami birds and an A-board with something amusing written on it. As I walked in there was a friendly atmosphere with the staff having banter with each other, even to the point of including me in it, an overall lovely welcome.
It took a while for me to decide what to have as there were so many fantastic options but I settled on the Coronation chicken sandwich. I chose this because I find Coronation chicken dreamy and it is my new favourite sandwich filling. If I love something I am going to try it out in many different places, just so I can find the perfect one, and I have to say that this is on the top of my list. (Yes, I have a list of favourite sandwich fillings….why don’t you?!)
I shall stop rambling and let you get to know them yourselves, have you met….Gannet and Guga?
Describe Gannet & Guga in three words
Friendly, fresh, friendly
Why the name Gannet & Guga?
To eat like a ‘gannet’ is the obvious answer but we wanted a theme that we could carry through with menu, decoration, colours and a Scottish connection with ‘guga’ being synonymous with the western isles. Also my mum is a proper birdwatcher and i wanted her to be happy 🙂
Where do you see Gannet & Guga in five years?
My business partner and I would love to have at least one other venue soon in Edinburgh and I would love to push the Vietnamese fusion with classic British as far as I can. I want to push the banh mi and summer roll angle to the extreme now that I know there is a thirst for it.
Describe your menu in a sentence:
Went on a journey west, ate America, crossed the Pacific to eat Asia, started home ate through Europe, came home and kept eating.
Give us three reasons why we should visit Gannet & Guga?
1. We actually care about adding flavour, freshness, health and more flavour into all our food.
2. Even though it’s a tiny place we make everything (where possible) ourselves and will continue to push ourselves each day to make even more.
If you had to eat anything in the world for the rest of your life what would it be and why?
Fresh seafood. Especially langoustines. My mum and dad would take us to loch fyne on holidays and I have nothing but good memories eating amazing food.
If you had to eat anywhere in Edinburgh (apart from Gannet & Guga) for the rest of your life where would it be?
Gardeners cottage has such a beautifully simple concept and is delivered so well. There is nothing about it I don’t like.
What is your biggest food vice?
Crisps!!! So bad but so addictive.
What is your favourite city for food other than Edinburgh?
Can I have 2? Hong Kong or Hanoi. Very different but equally amazing.
Fill in the gaps : If I had to be food I would be ….. Because…
Rump steak because I am cheap and sometimes a bit of an ass but some people think it’s the best.
If you are going out for a drink in Edinburgh where do you head?
You need a coffee, where is the first place in Edinburgh you think of? (Apart from Gannet & Guga)
Can I be a total philistine and say that my favourite cups of coffee are in my front garden with my girlfriend and my pet cat Bob on a lazy Saturday morning. (Sometimes it’s even instant!!)
What are your three favourite social media accounts to follow? (Can be any form of social media)
I am really new to social media aside from basic Facebook and I would struggle to name three. I would rather look backward than just say anyone.
