As you can tell I am incredibly into my food and drink, and recently I have developed a keen interest visually.
From what I have worked out so far, it is actually pretty hard to take a decent picture of food and drink. I know everyone and anyone takes a picture of their dinner, but it is only every so often I am actually wowed by an image and as a result I will visit the place it was taken.
Recently I was tagged in a video by a good friend of mine of a spoof of someone trying to take a picture of their coffee, it made me laugh a lot, especially when the camera crew turned up. Although I annoy most of those around me when eating out by taking pictures, I’m going to be honest here, I don’t actually care, as it’s something that I really enjoy doing.
So, I thought it was time to get to know some professionals in this matter, Scran Media. Scran Media produce eye catching photography and video for the hospitality industry, and the visuals that they produce are nothing but beautiful.
Describe Scran Media in three words
Visual content creators
Why the name Scran Media?
The site/brand was created to focus on marketing on the hospitality industry. We looked at all sorts of names related to food, beds, accommodation, restaurants etc. Most were too cheesy. ‘Scran’ won through because it covers so many aspects and is, in itself, informal enough to suggest a different starting point. We included ‘Media’ as it gives us room to add other visual and digital services if we choose.
Where do you see Scran Media in five years?
By a French Swimming pool! (Sorry). With more associates, Producing more video than photography. Video is pushing ahead because it allow for greater emotional engagement. High end photography on the other hand, while will always be needed, will become the exception rather than the rule.
Why did you choose the food and drink industry to photograph and film?
I fell into it several years ago while shooting restaurant interiors for the likes of The Scotsman and Home & Interiors. I’d be asked shoot a signature dish for the sidebar and lo and behold I could do a fairly decent job of it.
Give us three reasons why businesses in the food and drink industry should use Scran Media?
I can give you 4 reasons actually: We’re different. We don’t just show pretty pictures and expect a commission. Instead:
- We don’t simply do more of the same old same.
- We will soak up the brand.
- We learn about clients image needs and contribute to fulfilling their ambitions.
- We help transform client’s online and media appearance.
If you had to eat anything in the world for the rest of your life what would it be and why?
Hummus. It’s got protein, flavour and brings the exotic to the table. It’s easy to make, makes for a great snack and is easily packaged.
If you had to eat anywhere in Edinburgh for the rest of your life where would it be?
I’ve filmed (and eaten) there before but only recently got to eat there as a customer…… Escargot Blanc.
What is your biggest food vice?
Favourite city for food other than Edinburgh?
Cork and particularly The English Market. A large covered space with quality food producers of all descriptions. (Could the City Fathers and Mothers of Edinburgh conceive in their brains a covered space where people could gather to celebrate life and trade. There once was such a space which got turned into the Princes Mall)
Fill in the gaps : If I had to be food I would be ….. Because…
If I had to be food I would be Rhubarb…. Because…I’m stubborn.
If you are going out for a drink in Edinburgh where do you head?
In town The Hanging Bat. Near home the dog friendly Stable Bar.
You need a coffee, where is the first place in Edinburgh you think of?
Print works on Constitution Street.
